Jacob LeFevre

LeFevre is also spelled Ferber, LaFevre, LaFever, Lefebre, LeFever,and LeFevere. It is from the original Northern French surname Lefebvre or Lefèvre. It means smith.

Samuel L. Clemens (1835 – 1910), was known by his pen name, Mark Twain. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which is in Ralls and Marion Counties.

Jacob LeFevre was born April 2, 1797 in Pennsylvania. His parents were Jacob LeFevre and Rebecca Bachtell.

He married Catherine Hite Kemp on September 23, 1819. Catherine was born in November, 1800 in Ohio.

Catherine and Jacob's children included:
Olive LeFevre Clough (1820, married Abner Clough),
Elizabeth LeFevre Donaldson (1822, married David Donaldson),
Henry Coulson LeFevre (1824, married Catherine Elizabeth Donaldson),
Sarah Jane LeFevre (1826),
Rebecca LeFevre (1830),
Emily LeFevre (1832), and
William Allen Medil LeFevre (1840).

In 1840 they were in Violet Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. The household consisted of a man and a woman between 40 and 49, a girl and a boy between 15 and 19, and a boy between 5 and 9.

Jacob married Lucy M. Davis on January 13, 1847 in Marion County, Missouri. Lucy was born in Virginia about 1809.

Their children included:
Charles Hinton LeFevre (1847, married Jane L. Riley),
Richard Thomas LeFevre (1849), and
Sonora Crenshaw LeFevre (1854, married Edward Eddy).

Jacob went to California during the gold rush of 1849 and later returned to Missouri.

In 1850, 41 year old Lucy LeFevre was living with Nathaniel M. Davis in Spencer, Pike County, Missouri. The household also included 2 year old Charles H. Lefevre, baby Richard T. LeFevre, and 6 year old Clement Davis.

At the time of the 1860 census they were in Spenserburg, Spencer Township, Pike County, Missouri. The household consisted of Jacob age 62, Lucy age 30, William age 20, Charles age 12, Richard age 10, and Saviora age 6. Edward Bachelor age 22

Jacob died January 12, 1867.

  • Fairfield County is in central Ohio. The county seat is Lancaster.

    The first Europeans settled in the Northwest Territory in 1788. Migrants came from New York and New England. Ohio was admitted to the Union as the 17th state on March 1, 1803.
